HP Makes 3D Print Push

HP has named Steve Nigro to lead its 3D printing efforts after the company splits into two businesses in November.

Hewlett-Packard is set to split into two separate businesses in November, and as part of that move the company will name a new executive to head up its 3D printing efforts.3dp_hp3dprinting_printer

Steve Nigro, HP’s senior vide president of imaging and printing, will lead the 3D printing business for HP Inc., the new company that will sell printers and personal computers. The move was mentioned in an internal memo from HP Inc. CEO Dion Weisler, reported on by Fortune magazine.

According to the memo:

“When we announced our plans to separate, we knew that 3D printing would be a key area of innovation and growth for HP Inc. Our company is positioned perfectly to take advantage of our sophisticated intellectual property and know-how to transform industries and power the next industrial revolution. As our first 3D printing product nears commercial availability, I’m creating a new 3D Printing business group and center of excellence. Given the importance we’re placing on this business, we needed the right leadership, focus and organizational structure to drive this organization.” —Dion Weisler, HP Inc. CEO

HP earlier announced it would release its first 3D printer in 2016. The Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer could potentially reinvigorate the printer side of HP’s business, which has been declining in recent years.

Nigro is an engineer who has been with HP for more than 30 years. He got his start in the company’s R&D and manufacturing divisions.

The other half of HP, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, will be led by CEO Meg Whitman and will focus on data center hardware and business consulting.

You can see an interview with Nigro from earlier this year in which he discusses the 3D printing business here.
